Will an internal ultrasound always show if there are twins?

by Kimberlyk Baxter
(Ware, Ma)

I had and internal ultrasound done when we first found out we were pregnant and I was 8 weeks 5 days. It showed one baby, But I am having all the symptoms of twins. I haven't had another ultrasound yet as I am only 14 weeks now. Could that first internal ultrasound be wrong and there is actually 2 babies instead of 1. My great aunt had 3 sets of twins on my side of the family.

Thanks, Kimberly Baxter in Ma

Internal ultrasounds will not always show that you are pregnant with twins. I had an internal ultrasound at 9 weeks and only saw one. Then we listened to the heart beat at 12 weeks and only heard one.
Then at 19 weeks we went in for our first external ultrasound. We didn't want to know what it was (unless it was twins.) So I laid on the table and instantly when she put the wand on my belly we saw two orbs. The tech said, "So you've been to the doctor a few times? And they didn't, they didn't tell you it was twins?"
Sure enough, two babies!
They had separate placentas & separate sacs, but are identical. We did a DNA test for their first birthday to determine zygosity.

Yes and vaginal ultrasound will show twins. I had mine done at 8 weeks and it was determined that we were having twins.

Usually twins comes from the mothers side and will skip several generations.
