What are the chances of vanishing twin syndrome happening twice?

by rose
(england)

At my 12 week scan I was told my baby had a twin but it had died at about 8 weeks as only the sac remained. That was 3.5 years ago and now I'm pregnant again, what are the chances vanishing twin syndrome would happen again?

Vanishing twin...twice.
by: Anonymous

With my first pregnancy I learned at 8 weeks that I had lost one of my twins to vanishing twin syndrome. I am currently pregnant again, and learned at 6 weeks that I had experienced vanishing twin again. Although I haven't been able to come across the actual statistics for vanishing twin syndrome occurring twice, I have learned that some woman are prone to releasing more than one egg at a time during ovulation. Also, once a woman reaches age 30, multiple eggs tend to be released during ovulation, therefore making vanishing twin syndrome more common in woman over age 30. The current statistics for experiencing vanishing twin syndrome is 1out of 8 in multifetal pregnancies. Having just turned 30, and experiencing vanishing twin twice, I was shocked and saddened each time, but joyful in knowing the other baby was ok. In my first pregnancy, I carried my son to full term and he is happy, healthy, and doing wonderful. I am hopeful this pregnancy will have the same result.
