Twins not delivered after 37 weeks

by Saravana
(Chennai)

Hi,

My wife's carrying twins and its been 37 weeks and 5 days as on date. When we checked with the doc at the end of 37 weeks, she said that the twin babies are healthy and asked us to meet her again at the end of 38 weeks. My wife's still not got any signs of labor though there's been some false labor pains. There's not been any major decrease in the movement of the babies also. She's also not in great discomfort except the false pains, not being able to stand / walk easily, not able to get a comfortable posture while lying down and tiredness.

Should we be concerned because she's carried over 37 weeks and still not delivered? Is there something we should do?

This is the first time she's going to be a mom. This has been a pregnancy with no twin pregnancy complications whatsoever till date.

the longer the better

I had a scheduled c-section at 39 weeks exactly. I actually wanted it sooner as I was so uncomfortable, but the wait was worth it. My boys were born 7.12 and 7.13lbs. I was able to bring them home without any complications. I too did not have any signs of labor as was not the case with my singletons. Hang in there, its worth it.

Don't worry at all...

As long as your doctor says everything is fine then you're good. The longer they're in there the healthier and bigger they will be. I know it's SO HARD to hang in there the last few weeks but it's worth it. I just had our fraternal twins Feb 7, 2010 at 39 weeks they were both perfectly healthy 6.9lbs and 6.4lbs. At my 36 week appt I was 2cm dilated and 50% effaced so naturally I thought it would be happening any moment. At the 37 week appt. I was 4cm and 80% effaced again I thought OK this is happening soon. I was having contractions but nothing painful or consistent. I just kept timing them and making myself crazy. Finally I gave up, all the waiting was making me nuts. Then at 39 weeks the contractions started to be really strong and 20 minutes apart and continued to get stronger and closer and on Superbowl Sunday they were born. Healthy and big and wonderful. So just remember everyone is different and the longer the better as long as your doc says everything still looks good. Even though your wife is probably so uncomfy, I feel ya it does suck at that point and everything hurts, just hang in there they'll come when they're ready, good luck!

I just delivered...

I would say that my doctors would ask what the position of the babies are. I had one vertex and one breech. Breech baby [Emmett] stuck his foot in between the cervix and Max's head [vertex baby]. They were worried that if I did go into labor that Emmett's foot would come out first with a prolapse cord. I really don't think that would have happened - I was 37 weeks and 4 days. The doc's however [including the 2 Cert Nurse Mid-wives] really felt like delivering the babies via scheduled c was better than running the risk of the babies coming out with complications and having to have an emergency c. I am a complete advocate of natural birth, and am/was deeply committed to keeping them in there as long as possible... but in the end decided not to risk an complications. Not totally sure that it was the right decision, but I have 2 incredibly healthy babies and it was a calm collected joyous environment during the c-section vs. a crazy panic one [this was a deciding factor as well]. Anyhoo... I had zero complications during the preg as well... that's my very recent experience for what it is worth.

37 weeks

At 25 weeks, I was put on bed rest due to a shortened cervix. I am currently 37.2 weeks and happy as can be that our babies are still growing. As long as you can still eat and drink, keep em cookin!

I'm sure they're just happy in there :)

My twins were delivered at 39 1/2 weeks...only 4 days before my due date. They were a healthy 7+ pounds each and were worth the wait. I'm sure your wife is really uncomfortable...but hang in there!

Twins at 38 weeks
by: Anonymous

Hi, dont worry, we delivered our twins at 38.3 weeks, via c section. As with a singleton baby, the longer you can 'cook them' the better. Also the longer they're cooked, the more they will weigh. Our twins were 6 pounds 12, ans 6 pounds 4. Good healthy babies, that left hospital when we did.

Keep those babies cookin'
by: Kristin

I don't think there is any reason to be concerned. We delivered our twins at 38+2 weeks via scheduled c-section. I never went into labor and never had any contractions. The longer your babies stay in the better.

Keep on cookin

I dont think you should be concerend unless your wife is having complications or consistant contractions. I would say make it to the 38 week mark and if your wife has said enough is enough than talk to your OB and see what he/she says.

I made it to 38 1/2 weeks with no complication or contractions. I had a c-section.
