Twins in time

Matthew and Brian frst day home, after 3 weeks in the NICU

Matthew and Brian frst day home, after 3 weeks in the NICU

Our twin boys were born at 32 weeks 1 day at 840 and 841pm.

After going in to the hospital for labor pains on Sunday August 23rd I received a few shots and some pills to stop the contractions, I was released at 3am to go home. My contractions had stopped but only until late morning the next day. by 6 pm on August 24th my contractions were 3 minutes apart and 1 minute long!

They had been going strong since noon and I was in quite a bit of pain to the point that with every contraction I could not complete a sentence...

When I got to the hospital I was 4cm already with baby B still breech and for being so preemie the doctor insisted on a Cesarean section so as to not add stress to already stressed babies.

The procedure lasted 40 minutes from spinal block to last staple and both boys were born at 4lbs 4oz and 17 inches long.

We spent 3 weeks in the NICU, eating and growing. We hit some bumps along the way with abnormal tests and some nursing challenges. It was tearful for joy, and fear and stress between home and hospital, and even more stressful when Brian(baby B) was discharged but Matthew was not well enough yet.

Both boys have totally different personalities and grow, eat and sleep differently, but it is so much fun and I can't keep my eyes off of them.
I'm sure it will get more stressful as they become more active but I can't even bring myself to shut my eyes even when they are sleeping.

I've had help so far but when the help goes away I can only imagine it will be a bit more hectic feeding and changing and bathing them and balancing my own tasks.

30 wks gestation
by: Andrea

Wow I loved reading your story. My girls were born at 30 wks gestation, spent close to 6 wks in the hospital, Baby B (Jordyn) came home the day before Christmas, and Rylee came home the day after. It was flu season, so Big Brother (who is 5) was not allowed in the hospital at all.

I understand fully the part about the many tears... there were good days, and days tha weren't so good.

Initially- I cried when I found out they couldn't delay my labor any longer. Once my water broke, it was probably 15 minutes before the girls were born! Rylee 3lb 8oz 16 in long and Jordyn 3lb 2oz 16 in long. Baby B came out breech, and yes, it was vaginal. They gave me a spinal block because I was too far dilated for an epidural, and within seconds they were on their way out! I had some complications afterwards with hemorrhaging... I was really sad when I was discharged and they were not. It's so weird now, to think of those times- seems so far away but so close.

They are 5 1/2 mo old now, over 12#, 23 in long, and happy! :) Still nursing them, and working full time. Daddy stays home with babies and brother. They are eating rice cereal, and baby food! It is amazing to hear them laugh, and see them grab their toys and find eachother.

Again- I loved your story! Thank You for helping me think about our NICU stay again. Definitely a learning experience, huh!

Not to Bad
by: Christina (MN)

I have 5 month old twins and so far it is not that bad! You just might have good babies and not really feel the stress of the twins. That is how i am! They are just all around good babies! I love it when one is sleeping and I can pay attention to the other one and then usually the other one will fall asleep and the one will wake. and at night they both sleep all night! I do formula feed my kids, i did the beast feeding thing for 2 weeks and it just was getting to be way to much getting them lacked, then having to still bottle feed them and then still pumping! It felt like that is all i was doing! So we just went to formula! and about a week ago we started cereal, they are just getting the hang of it! It is so much fun! I just take everyday and not look to much ahead, because as soon as you do they are in college. Just enjoy and don't get stressed, if they cry that is fine they need to work there lungs:) Enjoy you cute boys!
