Twins and night waking

by Kimberly
(South Holland, IL, USA)

I am the proud mother of 5 children, the youngest are fraternal twins a girl and a boy. The twins slept all night starting at 4 months until about 6 months. Now they are 13 months old and still wake up at least once and sometimes twice during the night. What are we doing wrong or just not doing? My husband and I both work and we are sleep deprived (him more so than me).

I do not breastfeed, couldn't because of health issues. any answers or just support would be appreciated.

Hi Kimberly
First off - I'm sorry for your lack of sleep! It's really hard to be a mom running on empty. Second - you are not doing anything wrong. It could be so many things, time change, growth spurt, one twin being a lighter sleeper and waking the other - We've all been there - dragging ourselves out of bed to see what the problem is.
Are they waking up to eat or just crying?
Have you tried just letting them cry it out?
Have you tried putting them to bed a little earlier?
Have you tried a soothing noise ( white noise) machine so that little noises around the house don't wake them as easily.

Just some thoughts. You're already an expert parent if you have 5 children and you know that each one is different and that works for one may or may not work for the others. Hang in there - it's a stage. And I'll be posting a new section on the site soon regarding sleep issues because that is the #1 question that I get from twin moms!

All the best
Kim

Monitors Off
by: Shelly Cunningham

At about seven months my boys started waking up in the night, after three months of sleeping peacefully! This change was not a welcome one. I read an article online from a twin mom who decided that since her nursery was next door to her bedroom, she would forgo the monitor. I have since heeded her advice, and have never been happier. The slightest noises, them rolling over, etc. were waking me up constantly. Now they sleep through the night, as do I! When they do occasionally wake up crying, I can hear them, no problem, since they are next door. I think they still wake up at night, but they are able to self soothe themselves back to sleep without disturbing me.
