Twin Ultrasound risks

by Lindsey
(Laguna Niguel)

Hi I'm 14 weeks pregnant with twins and I am planning to have them at home if all goes well. Anyways, the doctors want to see me every 2 weeks because us twin mommies are considered "high risk" and so far they want to do tons of ultrasounds. I researched the pros and cons and now I don't want to get near one of those machines while my babies are growing and completely vulnerable. Has anyone gone through their pregnancy, the old fashioned way, without using ultrasounds for checkups??

My mom and twins
by: Anonymous

I know this was some 28 years ago, but I am a twin and my mom never recieved any ultrasounds while she was pregnant with my sister and I. The Dr.'s didn't even know she was having twins until she was suposedly in her 8th month, and he was considered a specialist in multiple births! My mom never had one because they didn't have any money and they couldn't afford one. She carried us both to term and we wieghed 6 and 7 pounds! You can do it without ultrasound I believe, as now I am carring my first baby and am desiring to deliver naturaly as well (no twins yet though). Hope this helps a little.

ultrasound risks

Personally I'd probably have 1 or 2, like the normal 19 week one, and maybe one near the end to determine baby's positions before giving birth (if I was having twins that is) but I would not feel comfortable having them regularly as I believe there are risks and the benefits would not outweigh them. If you are having the babies at home you obviously have faith in your body and your ability to birth your babies and I think, go with that!

My mother in law had twins and didn't have an ultrasound for her whole pregnancy, in fact she didn't know she was having twins til the second one came out! That was 25 years ago but still, they were fine. I actually don't know if she even went to the dr at all for her pregnancy!

The medical profession does not tell us about the risks associated with 'routine' things like ultrasound but the risks are definitely there and I think its great you've looked into it.

Best of luck :)

Never any problems...
by: Brenda

I have 4 kids, two singleton births and our twins...NEVER ever did we have any problems with ultrasounds. I think the risks of not having them would out weigh the risks if you didnt have them with a twin pregnancy. Twin pregnancy is HIGH risk anyway...you do not want to endanger your children because you didnt have an ultrasound.

Talk with your doctor...they know better than anyone else on this board or any website you read. They know the risks of doing it or not doing it. These are your babies and they are high risk as it is since they are twins.

ultrasounds
by: Kristin

We had ultrasounds every month starting at 16 weeks, and before that we had about 6 because we conceived through IVF. I am so thankful to have gotten to see and check on our babies regularly. If nothing else, it reassured us that they were growing and maturing "normally." We delivered at 38 weeks 2 days to 2 healthy 6lb 2oz girls. If you ask my husband or I, we wouldn't have it any other way.
We also had O/B appts every 2 weeks in which they measured me and we listened to their heartbeats and at no time did my Dr label me high risk, in fact everytime I brought it up, he reassured us that our pregnancy was going just fine, no complications. If there were complications then we would be considered high risk.
I would suggest at least having a couple, maybe not every 2 weeks, but maybe monthly or every 2 weeks. These are your babies :)

Risk
by: Anonymous

The risks of ultrasound do not out weigh the risk of not following Dr. recommended prenatal care. Ultrasound provides your doctor with sometimes cruticial information about your babies. I have had three amazing pregnancies two twin pregnancies my first twin pregnancy at 28 weeks lost one of my girls to TTS this would of not been diagnosed without ultrasound. My second twin pregnancy I had ultrasounds every two weeks I couldnt of been followed close enough without the ultrasound. When one of my sons growth was restricted it was ultrasound that told us that. There is so much more to ultrasound than just gender identification. Please please reconsider your babies lives could depend on it>

Ultrasounds

Good for you for doing your research!
I have had 3 pregnancies, one of which was "high risk." I had 2 ultrasounds with that pregnancy, and became suspicious when my tiny baby would jerk and "spasm" during the ultrasounds, so I started researching, even though the techs told me they were harmless.
I came to the conclusion they are NOT harmless.
I stopped having them after that, and only had one at 7 months with my 2nd pregnancy to make sure everything was okay when I started spotting. I also had one with my last pregnancy at 9 weeks because the doctors were almost sure it was a tubal. They were wrong, and I saw my tiny "gummy bear" bouncing and flailing around so much they couldn't date the pregnancy because the baby was moving too much to get a measurement.
I avoid them whenever possible, even if that means I don't find ou what I'm having!
Good luck with your twins!
