Twin pregnancy and owning dogs

by Dawn
(Santa Rosa, CA)

My partner is actually the one who is pregnant, but we are having this dilemma about our dogs. Currently we have 2 dogs and just cannot imagine life especially with 2 dogs and 2 newborns.

Are there any people out there who have been in this situation that can maybe let us know that yes, it is doable or not it is crazy?

She's not sure what it is going to be like in 6 months trying to take a dog or both dogs for a walk. Currently she is beginning her 9th week, so she feels fine.

Thank you so much your any input you might have.

Congratulations on your twin pregnancy! Having two dogs - well - some of that will depend on your dogs - are they high maintenance pets, are they large or small, are they possessive of you, are they well trained - that kind of thing.

The first year with twins is absolutely exhausting - they will require your attention to feed and change and rock them and there will likely be little time left over to even shower!

With that being said - if you have help, if the dogs are well behaved and don't require huge amounts of exercise - if you can go along for walks and push the babies while she walks the dogs - that kind of thing.

The logistics of handling two babies and two dogs at the same time with one person would NOT work - but if you or someone are available to help then maybe.

There are a lot of variables so I can't really answer for certain.

Good luck and if you do manage it - be sure to send in a picture so we can let the world know it can be done!

2 dogs and twins
by: J

My wife and I are expecting our twins to arrive later this year. We have two dogs and have spent a lot of time getting them some extra training as well as being more consistent with them and the commands that we give them. "No" has really started to mean "no" instead of a suggestion to them. The roam free in the house as well as outside, but have more strict limits from us as to how far they can go and exactly where they are allowed to go. The kids room has begun to be off limits, as well as the kitchen and dining room while we eat. We direct them to their "special" spots where they can feel comfortable and still see what's going on and not be completely secluded from what we're doing. I think it's going to be important for you and your partner, as well as my wife and I, to take a little time and spend it with the dogs. Just a little attention goes a long way, as well as helps to keep them engaged in the family. If you don't think you can manage them and treat them the way that you think they should be treated, then you should begin exploring new homes for them where they can get the attention care that you want them to have.

Two Dogs, Two Cats & Three Babies
by: Angelice

My hubby and I had two dogs & two cats before the twins came. We were actually more concerned about one of the cats, rather than the dogs. When we found out we were pg with baby #3, only eight months after the twins were born, we did seriously consider getting rid of the dogs. We just weren't interacting with them anymore. They stayed outside during the day and slept inside at night.

We still have the dogs and the cats. The cats are now spending most of the time outside, which they enjoy. The dogs have been the same. I just feel bad for them.

Hope some of this helps. BTW, my husband and I both work and kids are in daycare.

Good luck -
