Twin not sleeping at night!!

by Marcelle
(Portland, OR)

Help! I have B/G twins, 7 weeks that will not get on any schedule at night, not matter what we have tried. They continue to wake up every 2.5-3 hrs to eat and its impossible to get them back down, they are on such a weird schedule, we never know what to expect. For the most part, they will eat/sleep at the same time as each other but we have been trying to get them to sleep longer at night, at the same time. We tried the EASY method and it didnt work at all!

I hear that we should wake them up at the same time in the morning and put them down and the same time but how do you do that if you are always off schedule from letting them sleep a bit longer at night if they choose, this does not make sense to me!

Life with Twins
by: Natasha

I have girl twins, and twin a likes to wake up a lot, and twin b likes to sleep but when twin a wakes up to eat I wake up twin b. I do so by changing her diaper. Then feed her. I was reading online at what to expect the first year, to wake them up before your ready for bed to feed them, even if they only eat 2-3 oz. Then they will sleep when you are ready to sleep. It will get easier. If you keep them together life won't be so crazy. They say it takes 2-3 days to get a baby on a schedule or change their schedule. So if you try to put them on a schedule and they are fussy, just remind yourself, this too shall pass.

First of all, their babies and MOST babies do not sleep through the night until around 6 months of age. There is a reason that babies wake at night and that is to eat. My 5th child would wake at night then was impossible to get back to sleep but like all stages it passed and he is 7 months old now and sleeping through the night most of the time. He rarely wakes, however my 3rd and 4th (twins) didnt sleep that well, as a matter of fact, twin B, Roman, still doesnt always sleep through the night and wakes up crying and I have to put him back to bed. The female twin Hope, started sleeping through the night most of the time around 9 months. Preemies, if yours were so, are esp hard to put on any schedule and need to eat every 3 hours or so regardless if they were waking on their own in order to get the amount of calories they would need. Good luck and dont rush them. You'll miss these days soon

It'll get easier

We had our twins on an every three hours feeding schedule around the clock until three months & it worked really well. We were careful to keep the room dark (only a lamp) at night & light in the day. We also let the house be quite loud (vacuuming, TV, radio, etc.) during the day and very quiet at night. We also swaddled our boys at night, which I HIGHLY recommend! We loved them & so did the boys.
Most of all, I recommend that you keep the babies on the same schedule- feed, change, sleep and repeat. At any cost!
I so feel you on the lack of sleep. And I promise that it will get better. The boys are nine months now & they sleep from about 8:30pm to 7:00am. It is lovely!
I hope some of this advice helps!

just go with the flow...

What they are doing is called...being a newborn. They dont have really "set" schedules yet and you cant depend on them to sleep through the night yet. My girls didnt sleep through the night intil 3 1/2 months old. And still sometimes they wake up during the middle of the night. So please be patient and dont expect them to sleep through the night at 7 weeks of age. Just get your rest when they do.

Newborns will eat every 3 hours or so. So its normal for them to eat often. It helps them gain weight and grow. I try to keep my girls on the same schedule but sometimes its hard to do so...like today. One is up right now and one is sleeping.

I have 4 kids and I threw those darn books out the window on my 2nd child. You need to do what works for YOU! Whether its rocking them, bathing them right before going to bed, etc. Please join the forum on this site. Its a great place to ask other mothers of twins questions. And...its a place for support as well!

Normal
by: Anonymous

What your babies are doing is completely NORMAL. You can't expect such young babies to sleep through the night yet. Sometimes it happens (my daughter started sleeping 7 hours straight at night at 8 weeks of age), but most of the time it doesn't. My son was nearly 5 months old before he slept longer than 4 hours at a time. Give them time to adjust!
