Twin Birth Question - C-Section or Vaginal?

by Megan
(Indiana)

I would like to know whether it would be better to get a c-section or have a vaginal birth? So far I am able to go either way. I am 33 weeks and 1 day pregnant with twins. I was just wondering what I should do or if you had an thoughts that would help me decide. Thanks!

Congrats
by: Shannon

Congrats on making it this far. I remember sitting there starting to think about delivering and what was best. Like others have said though, you still have some time.

I had to have a c section because both babies were breech. At first my son was head down and ready to go, but then about 2 weeks prior to delivering he decided to become breech as well. The first week after having a c section is painful and hard because you are not as mobile as having a vaginal delivery, but I didn't mind it as much because at 10:04pm I was rolled in the deliver room, at 10:34pm my twins were both born (in the same minute) and by 11:10pm I was taken to my room. So in that aspect I liked the c section, but healing afterwards is hard, but you just have to remember it's all worth it in the end.

Depends
by: Sara

First of all..Congrats!!

Now, to the question. It really does depend on the pregnancy and the babies. I was scheduled to be induced and then to deliver vaginally. I go in to the hospital and I am already 3cm. So they decide to put this foley bulb in to dilate me some more and then they were going to start the induction later that night. All of a sudden baby "B"'s heart rate drops into the 60's and they can not get it back up, so they had to do an emergency c-section and both my boys were out of me in 90 seconds!!! I was just laying there contracting, then all of a sudden they are telling me my boys are not getting any oxygen to thier brains and they need to get them out NOW!! It was a scary moment, but it all worked out. The boys bounced right back and were breathing on their own, once they were out. They are now 11 months old and are both a little shy of 20lbs each.

So, I would still recommend vaginal and plan on that, but just be prepared for a c-section. Most c-sections are not as dramatic as mine, sometimes the babies just don't dropped or are just a little bit too comfortable where they are and need a little tug :)

Whatever you decide is what is best for you and your babies.

Good Luck

I vote for Vaginal
by: Lieucretia

I opt for vaginal, personally. I was afraid of a c-section (surgery) so was very thankful when all went well for a vaginal delivery. The healing time was fast within 2 or 3 days I felt great again. I delived our twins at 39 weeks vaginally and 100% natural, no episiotomy either. Everything went smoothly and great. There is DEFINITELY something empowering about it for sure. I'm SO proud of myself for doing and can't believe I did it, I don't do pain. Yet I did, it's an amazing feeling to accomplish this and know what you're capable of, it made me feel like I could do anything....ha twins...I got this, lol! I tell my story too much I'm sure but I LOVE "bragging" a bit I can't help it. I DELIVERED TWINS 100% NATURALLY NO DRUGS and they're perfect, YAY!!!! feels good!! This is what was right for me and it worked out, thankfully. Obviously this is not for everyone. Ultimately you have to do what YOU'RE comfortable with it's YOUR experience, you want it to be right. GOOD LUCK!!

All depends
by: Anonymous

If you can go with a vaginal than do so. But it really depends on the babies and what THEY want to do. You still have a while before you should start thinking about delivery and even then its up to the babies. If they stay head down you should be good to go for vaginal birth. If baby A is breach, most likely you will be having a c-section. And even then you could be having both. Its happened before. Nothing is for sure when delivering multiples.

Do it the normal way
by:

If you can deliver vaginally, try to. I would've tried if I was given a chance. But one of my twins turned breech at 35 weeks. But if you cannot deliver vaginally, it would still be an empowering experience bringing about 2 children in this world. Good luck!

Vaginal
by: Lindsey

I personally feel it's best to deliver vaginally, if possible. It's better for the babies to be squeezed out so there isn't any fluid left in the lungs. It's also less pain medication that you'll need to take. I delivered my twins vaginally at 34 weeks, it was hard but I wasn't too sore after. I hurt more from the epidural spot on my back. It was hard for me to push them out, because I couldn't push effectively, due to getting the epidural at 9 cm. I recommend getting it sooner so it starts to wear off, if your planning on getting one. The first was the hardest but the second came out only 10 min after. You can definitely do it! It's a very rewarding experience!!

Birth ?
by: Kristin

Congratulations on making it to 33 weeks!

We chose to have a c-section with our girls even though both were head down. My reasonings included; I was scared of having a "double whammy" delivering Baby A vaginally and then Baby flipping and having to have a c-section, I was on modified bed rest from 26 weeks-38+2 weeks and I was done being pregnant and was tired and thought that a c-section would be easier, and lastly, I knew that I was going to be sore either way (squeezing 2 babies out of me or having abdominal surgery), so what would be the least stressful for all of us. I don't regret my decision what so ever. I was off all pain medication within a week of being home and I was on my own (hubby went back to work after a week and my mom left after a week also) and doing just fine with our girls within a week. I'm sure that even with a vaginal delivery I would have felt about the same way.

Our hospital was great (and different from a lot of hospitals I am learning), in that after I was sewn up, I was given our girls and was wheeled out of the OR with them in my arms. I didn't even have feeling back in my legs yet. As soon as we were in recovery I was able to nurse them while we were all checked and made sure we were stable. This is not always the case, so you may want to check with your hospital to see what their procedures are. Some are not given the option to see or hold their babies until they are out of recovery which could be 1hour+.

My OB wouldn't even let us entertain delivery options until I made it past 35 weeks because if they came before it would have automatically been a c-section for the girls safety.

Good Luck!
