The babies sacs are different sizes should I be concerned?

by Mayda
(San Antonio, TX)

I'm 10 weeks pg. I found out last week at 9 weeks that I was having twins. Baby A measured at 9wks 1 day Baby B measured at 8 wks 4 days. Baby B's sac was I want to say half of baby A's sac but both had good heartbeats. The dr didnt really say much I go back this week for a detailed ultrasound. I'm scared.

I have had 7 miscarriages in the past and 17 months ago I gave birth to my stillborn son at 38 weeks.I just want more info before I go in. Have any of you had twins that had different size sacs and was it a concern? Thank you for your time

Hello, I wrote the original post. My baby girls were born at 27 weeks. Miiche was baby A 2 lbs 7 oz and Akuu was 1 lb 7 oz. . We were very concerned about both but mostly baby Akuu. I'm sad to say we lost Miiche her left lung kept collapsing :( and. Ended up popping. Happy to announce after 6 mo this in NICU Akuu is home and growing .my prayers with you and your babies

My twins' sizes...
by: Sara

My babies are growing farther apart in utero, as well! I am worried now that I read one woman's baby died at birth. Baby A is huge and healthy (a boy), but Baby B is a week and half behind and we couldn't determine the sex yet. My OB told me not to worry yet that it was more of a concern at a later gestational age, but now the thoughts are there that something is going wrong.

Well, at pregnancy 9weeks nothing was in my womb even though the pregnancy test proved that am pregnant till 11weeks that it showed up and was twin, , am 29weeks pregnant, separate womb one is a week older than the other, i also asked my doc about it, she did not say anything convincing, i also think it nature, the most important thing is to know both are healthy and have close eyes on them.

Thank you for your comments. I went in today for my ultrasound Twin A measured 10 wks 3 dys and Twin B measured 9 wks 4 days. there is still a significant size difference. The Dr said that at this point its still early that they need to keep a close eye on us. I go in next week for another appt and in 3 weeks for another US. I asked if they were identical he said he's not positive yet but if he had to guesss he said fraternal. Thanks again I will keep you posted

At my 12 week ultrasound is when I found out I was having twins. He said one baby look like 12 weeks and one like 13. But nothing else was ever said after that. I gave birth at 34 weeks, and they both were as healthy as a 36 weeker. Baby A was 4lbs 9oz and baby B 4lbs 3oz. They only stayed in the NICU 7 days. I would just try not to worry too much ( I know it is easy said then done) stress free mom = stress free babies. Until the doctor says there is something wrong I wouldn't stress too much.

Given your past history I am sure you doctor will watch you closely. I only had one placenta and my girls were not that different in size. No two babies will be the same size anyhow. Please keep us updated.

I have. Twice. To be honest, I am glad you are a bit worried. I had an OB who was not worried at my ten week ultrasound that there was a difference. I ended up giving birth to the twins at 30weeks and one passed away from a heart defect caused by IUGR. He was always a much smaller guy. The discordance kept grwong bigger throughout the pregnancy.

Do you know if you have one placenta or two? If it is one, then it could be signs of first trimester TTTS (Twin to Twin Transfusion). If you have two seperate placentas, one may have just formed in a way that may cause some IUGR for the baby. That doesn't mean the baby won't develop, but you will need a doctor who is eager to keep a close eye on you and continusously monitor growth. Also, you may want to have an amnio ruling out genetic disorders that can cause this type of problem.
Finally, are your dates correct? One baby could be measuring a few days bigger than LMP dates and one can be measuring smaller......meaning that the average would be somewhere inbetween.

Good Luck!
