Should I work while pregnant with twins?

by Kim
(Redding, Ca)

I am 13 weeks pregnant with twins and was going to start a job next week as an RN where I would be stressed and on my feet 12 hours per shift, and 3 shifts per week. It would be really hard to make ends meet not working and my husband is thinks it may be best for the twin babies. I feel guilty not being able to handle a nursing job, and don't know if I should take it easy with the whole stressful job thing as I have not been feeling my best while spending extended periods on my feet already. I can do a couple hours of house work and then I feel a great need to drink water and relax. I get winded very easily, and heart palpitations soon there after. Should I take it easy just because I tire really easily, or am I succumbing to laziness? Either way, how long is one able to work with a twin pregnancy?

Working...
by: RC

You need to LISTEN to your doctors and PUT YOUR BABIES FIRST!!! I wanted to work my whole pregnancy (I own a restaurant, so on my feet and busy for hours on end). I remember at an appointment around 30 wks I was all excited when I left that my work hours hadn't been discussed when my doctor came flying down the hall to tell me he wanted me to cut my hours to part time!!! I did reluctantly for my babies and didn't know what to do with myself hanging out with the dog at home-but it was good, and I was still working at 37 weeks--Although it was incredibly physically demanding and I don't think if I had realized at the time the stress it put on the babies that I hadn't considered that I would have done it or would do it again(I delivered healthy id girls at 38.5 wks unscheduled). Good luck, I hope you have a healthy pregnancy too!

Working while pregnant

I am still working with twins and I am 19 weeks. Since I normally work with chemicals I have been moved to a desk which allows me to stay off my feet. The profile the doctor gave me specifically states that you should not work 12 shifts. Best bet would be to go to your doctor and explain everything you would be doing at your job so he can write down what you can and can't do. Then see if that will work for the hospital. If not, I would stay home, but you may be suprised that a lot of places are willing to work with you because they know it is a temperary condition and don't want to deal with the whole pregnancy discrimination thing. I guess pregnancy is suppose to be treated somewhat similar to a disability where they can't refuse to hire you because your pregnant ect.

Rest is necessary
by: Shelly Cunningham

I won't tell you what YOU should do, because YOU know your body best, but for me... I was so relieved to be taken off work at 27 weeks!!! I was so exhausted everyday after being on my feet. I was placed on moderate bed rest- but really I stayed off my feet because any housework, etc. caused contractions. Because of my ability to stay off my feet & sleep a lot, I stayed pregnant to 37 weeks. Just do what your body tells you to do and you will do right by your twins!
