Question about buying car seats for twins

by Paula
(Enon, Ohio USA)

I am pregnant with twins. What do you suggest when buying their first car seats, infant seats or convertible seats? I would like to save money and buy the convertible ones, but I know the idea of just picking up the car seat and carrying it into a restaurant will be beneficial as you always have something to sit the baby in. What are your thoughts?

a consideration
by: Jacqui

might want to consider this as well. it is not uncommon for twins to be small, most convertibles can only be used for 5 lbs and up.

my boys are 15 months now. one is in a convertible and the other still in his infant carrier. the carriers were SOOOO much easier, particularly before they could sit in high chairs. going to a restaurant w/o the carriers and both parents are now holding a baby. we have a older singleton as well, so you can see how impossible this could get quickly.

when my boys were 7 months we were in a wreck and subsequently had to get new car seats. my bigger twin was within 4 lbs of outgrowing his infant carrier so we went ahead with the convertible seat for him. we were on vacation in gulf shores and the entire ride back home he looked miserable. he kind of scrunched down in it (it was in the full reclined position) b/c they were just getting to where they could sit well. i have no idea how they think a 5 lb baby would ride comfortably in a convertible seat. we actually bought him another carrier to use until he outgrew it - then pulled the convertible seat back out and are using it now.

the new bucket seats (infant carriers) are going up to 32 or 35 lbs which will allow the child to stay in them for much longer. the older ones only went to 20 or 22 lbs. most people got at least 1 year out of the infant carriers but with the new increased weight limits you could probably get 2 years out of them. my oldest turns 4 tomorrow and he is only 38 lbs!

Up to you

My boy/girl twins are 13 months old and have have outgrown the infant car seats that we have been using. We were blessed that a close family member (that we trust) gave us one seat and some other family members went in together to buy us the other one. So we technically haven't purchased one until now. The infant seats they've been using go to up to 22 lbs. Some infant seats go up to 32 lbs (which could be used much longer). It really is up to you and your budget. I will say that it is VERY convenient (especially with twins) to be able to carry the babies in and out of places in their carseats...and have somewhere for them to sit as you said. But if the budget is tight, you could go ahead and get the convertible. Just this week we purchased two Britax Marathon convertible car seats (grand total of over $500) but these are rated up to 65 lbs. One more piece of useful info (for ALL TWIN MOMMIES) is that at Babies-R-Us, they have a "Twin Discount" on all large purchases. So, items such as furniture, strollers, car seats, high chairs, etc...you receive 10% off! And since we have to buy 2 of most things, that is very helpful. :o)

Car Seats
by: Christina

Well I liked having the bucket seat at first. Yes, it is nice to always have even if you are just visting a friend there is something they can always be in. My twins (Boy and Girl) just turned one. but for Christmas I asked for gift cards, so that bought us the 2 convertible car seats that stay in my car and then my husband uses the bucket seats in his car (we only have the kids in his car when he picks them up for daycare). The weight limit on the bucket seat that we have is I think 30 lbs. So I am not sure what we are going to do at that point. Well they are only 20lbs now so I guess I will figure that out at that time:) I hope this helps.
