One of my twins is measuring one week behind the other

by Cristy
(Colorado)

At my 13 week twin ultrasound, twin A measured a full week behind twin B. I am very worried about this.

I have a follow up ultrasound in 3 weeks. Is this common during a twin pregnancy?

Are they identical twins?
by: Amy

I had exactly the same thing happen at my 13 wk scan, I was told I was having identical twins at this point. If they are identical, sharing a placenta can cause problems and my pregnancy was monitored very closely. The size difference did actually get bigger and by week 22 baby A was on the 50th centile and baby B was below the 0.4th, she was about the size of an 18 wk baby. My friend also had i.d twins and 1 baby was 1 week behind the other the whole way through her pregnancy, the size difference never increased with her babies. If they are fraternal however I wouldn't be worried as they will not be sharing the same placenta and will not share a blood supply (this can cause TTTS which my babies ended up getting). My babies are fine, 9 months old and there is still a difference in size. I know its hard not to worry but its out of your hands and the docs know what to look out for so unless theyre concerned I wouldn't be.
