OB refused to check for twins

(Chicago, IL)

I am 32 weeks pregnant with fraternal twin girls. I felt like I was having twins from the start. I had a lot of extreme pregnancy symptoms, and fraternal twins run in my family.

First, I tested 6 days before my missed period, and it came up positive before I could even set the test on the bathroom counter. I knew my hormone level must have been really high. At that point I was having extreme cramping. My boobs had grown a cup size by my missed period. I was extremely tired and extremely hungry. I had gained 5 pounds by the time of my first OB appointment at week 7. From what I read, with twins, your uterus, blood volume, and breast tissue gain weight quickly with twins.

My OB told me to cut back on the sweets. I said, "I don't eat too many sweets. I am a marathoner."

At my next appointment at 12 weeks, I was looking like I was 18 weeks pregnant. He listened for the heartbeat, and I asked him to move the doppler over to see if there was a second heartbeat. He asked why I would think that. I explained everything to him (as I stated above), and stressed that I was really showing for 12 weeks. His response was, "Everyone shows at different times."

At 16 weeks, I asked him again to listen for a second heartbeat, which he did not. I told him I was switching practices.

At my 20 week appointment with the new OB, he did the standard 20 week ultrasound and said, "Did your last OB tell you that you were having twins?" I was like, "No....I tried telling him." I was so excited. I had been praying to have twins my whole life. As an only child (which I can't stand being), I am so excited my girls will have an instant sibling.

I am on bed rest at home right now, and have been since week 29. Hopefully, the girls will at least make it in me till week 34, which is a week and a half away. Obviously, I'd like them to last longer, but I know 34 weeks is when the won't try and stop labor.

You will make it!

I took the home test at 5 weeks, test was positive, my Obgyn confirmed pregnancy. At six weeks I was rushed to the hospital for cramping and spotting they did an ultra sound and I was told I am having twins. I continued to spot and cramp for three months they told me to try to take it easy. I did, I again was rushed to the hospital at 29 weeks for severe contractions. I was hospitalized for 5 days, they put me on bed rest and administerd me with steroids and medications to stop the contractions I am now 34 almost 35 weeks pregnant and still on the meds to stop the contraction also on a home monitoring to moniter the contractions and I am doing great, babies weight through the sonograms are both 5lbs. I have about three weeks to go for full term twins. Please if you do go into labor DEMAND medication to advance your babies lungs and hold out until your almost full term.

Good Luck
by: Natasha

You can make it to 37 weeks, just keep telling yourself that! And if you do go into labor around 34 weeks, DEMAND they try to stop it. My girls were born at 34 weeks, and had they not had a steriod shot they would have been in the NICU for a long time. Even if it does not work, at least you know you tried to stop it and gave them a fighting chance. I will keep you and your little ones in my prayers everyday, GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS!

Me, too!
by: Shelly Cunningham

My story is not exactly the same, but my midwife had mentioned that my uterus seemed big, but when I asked her about it at the next appointment, she brushed it off & said it meant nothing. We did an internal ultrasound & doplar prior to my 20 week ultrasound and found nothing.
At that 20 week ultrasound the tech said, "You've been to the clinic three times & they didn't... and they didn't... and they didn't tell you it was twins?"
I was stunned! Other than my midwife telling me my uterus seemed big at six weeks, I really had no exaggerated symptoms, so we were really knocked off our feet!
Good luck with your pregnancy & homecoming. Our first six weeks home with the boys was magical. I loved it!
