Being a Mother of TwinsWho am I and what do I know about being the mother of twins? Well, this page is about me, Kimberley Becker and who I am, what I do, and why this website was created. I understand that people like to see who is 'behind' the site! ( You'll have to excuse the photo quality as we didn't have a digital camera until after the twins were born.) So here I am and here's my story and I'd love for you to browse around and feel free to add yours !
I am a happily married mother of 4 children actually - not just twins. In May or 1997 I gave birth to a 32 week old premature son due to a car accident in my 6th month of pregnancy. I went through all the worries, the bedrest, the NICU time, the complications and scares - you name it. So I understand what some of my readers are going through with their premature twin babies.
In August of 2002, I gave birth to a full term huge baby girl who made her entrance into this world late - and sunny side up , causing the most excruciating pain of my life with back labor. After that I swore I would never get pregnant again ! I think I even told my husband to hold me to it no matter what . We now had one boy and one girl - the so-called 'million dollar family'. And everyone assumed we were done having children. Well....
In April of 2005, I delivered fraternal twins, boy and girl at 37 weeks and 5 days gestation, with the services of a midwife. The twins were what I like to call a 'two -for-one special.' They were a huge surprise as my husband and I hadn't quite settled on whether we wanted to have more children or not. Our family is now complete. As a very busy mom myself, as well as a self-confessed internet addict - the very first thing I did once I got the news after the ultrasound ( other than laugh uncontrollably because I really thought the doctor was joking !) was to hit the 'net to find out all the information I could. What I found was information spread all over the place and so much of it was depressing ! Statistics and problems, health concerns and worries - what I was really looking for was a PLAN and some practical advice. Too much of the information was scattered all over the place. I knew that I only had less than 9 months to prepare for this momentous event and I wanted to be ready for the challenge.
Most of all , I had wanted a place to go to ask questions - to find out what was 'normal', to talk with other mothers of twins.Being a mother of twins IS a challenge - it is different than having one baby or two babies - or even having two under two - having twins is having two separate children at the same developmental stage. The first few years are hard, but fun and exciting too! The purpose of this site was to help other mothers of twins, fathers of twins, and grandparents of twins with information, support, encouragement and advice. It is also my way of being able to be home with my family, and still earn an income. My family has been blessed with 4 healthy, beautiful children. I've been able to experience having a son, having a daughter and being the mother of twins. It is my sincere hope that you enjoy reading this Raising Twins site, that you have a healthy and happy pregnancy and that you love (almost!) every minute of being the mother of twins!
