Is my Doctor making my twin pregnancy more stressful?

by Dawn Whitaker
(Woodbridge, VA)

I am almost 19 weeks along with twins and these will be my first childern. I am having a health pregnancy other then having bad morning sickness for 2 months and just last week pinching my sciatic nerve. Each time I go to the doctor they tell me I am doing fine but remind me that 35 weeks would be fullterm for twins and if I go into pre term labor there is nothing they can do until I am 24 weeks along. Each time this stresses me out! Are these quotes normal? Now even my husband is getting worried. Any feedback?

Its normal for them to tell you this. I know mine did. They want to inform you as much as possible. You have a high risk pregnancy beucase you are carrying twins. The want to get you to 35 weeks but you dont need to deliver at 35 weeks, thats just where they want you to go to. You want to keep those little babies in as long as possible. The longer they stay in the better off they are and the better off they wont end up in the NICU. I delivered at 38 1/2 weeks and the girls were great weights and never spent a day in the NICU.

Hang in there, dont get stressed out! Its not good for you or the babies. Congrats on your twin pregnancy!

Don't listen to the negative...
by: Jessica

Don't let your doctor stress you out. He/she should be there to encourage you...not bring you down. If it is bothering you and your husband that badly, you may consider changing doctors. I know this may seem scary but there are doctors out there who will build you up emotionally. But no matter what you decide to do, just keep as positive an attitude as you can. My doctor told me similar things at the beginning of my twin pregnancy but I told her I was determined to give my babies the best chance possible and that I'd carry them as long as I could. She recommended scheduling their birth for 36 weeks but as that time got closer, yes, I was uncomfortable but I didn't do that. I ended up having a complication-free pregnancy and gave birth at 37 weeks 2 days to a healthy 6 lbs baby boy and a 5 lbs 12 oz baby girl. Neither had to go to the NICU or special care nursery and both were able to leave the hospital when we did. So, although it seems that everyone thinks twin pregnancies have to be complicated, don't let them stress you. You keep your chin up. You're gonna need all your strength, mentally and emotionally AFTER your babies are born.

First of all congratulations on your pregnancy! What your doctor is telling is true, you are high risk, babies born before 24 weeks have a very tough road ahead of them, and your goal should be to make it past 35 weeks. I was put on modified bed rest at 26 weeks and made it to our scheduled c-section at 38 weeks 2 days with two beautiful 6lb 2oz baby girls who came home with us. Take care of yourself, eat well, drinks lots of water and rest, rest, rest.

Nothing to worry about.
by: Naty

Okay, the doctors always inform you on this!! I really hope that the same way he is always reminding you of the bad things that could possibly happen (God forbid they do not occur!!), he is also complimenting as every goes by during your pregnancy. I was always told "you are at high risk of having premature twins," "you have to eat for two," etc!!! Let me tell you, I lost 10 pounds at the beginning. Then gained 15 in total. I am 5'2, so imagine how hugeeee my belly was because not only did I get induced at 39 weeks!!! My babies came out to be 7 pounds and 12 ounces!! Just live your normal life, offcourse, take care of yourself, go to your appointments and just THINK POSITIVE!!! I was always worried, I even had my baby shower at 25 weeks because I said "what if I give birth before". I think people over react!!! Good luck!!!

Being Informed
by: Shelly Cunningham

I am sure your doctor just wants you to be informed. It's true that your babies need to make it to 34-35 weeks at least to ensure their health. I am sorry that it scares you, but just take information and make it your goal. Then do everything within your power to stay pregnant until then. (resting, drinking plenty of water, and eating right)
I was on light bedrest from 27 weeks, which was hard to do, but worth it-- I made it to 37 weeks and both my boys came home with me.
Good luck to you!
