twins ultrasound when i was 8 weeks & 5 days

OK I'm 18 years old and I found out i'm having twins at 8w5d pregnant. I am now 17 weeks and 4 days pregnant. I am 6 foot even and over weight so I hear its a good chance for me to carry full term is that true? & also when I was 11 weeks and 5 days pregnant I was bleeding and rushed to the hospital they did a emergency ultra sound and did other test. they said I had a hemorrhage behind the babies but they were fine. my doctor was very angry about this and said I didnt need one done. I hear with twins you are supposed to have regular ultra sounds done? my ob gyn says no not until 20-25 weeks.. 5 days ago (17 weeks preg.) i had very very sharp pains for two days straight and I timed it the first night 15mins. and the second night 45 minutes I thought I was dying. ! my doctor says don't go 2 the hospital unless you see blood. do i need a new doctor or is this ok? sorry so long and so many questions this my first pregnancy i used NO fertility drug (i get that question a lot for some reason) & also can someone explain to me "vanishing twin syndrome?" this pregnancy just scares me so much.

thanx to anyone that can help

this is my first time on this site and might not find it again

New Doc & Scared
by: Amberly

Hun, you definately need to find a new doctor. When you are the mother of the babies and your not absolutely sure and confident in the doctor, it is your right and responsibility to choose another doctor.
I had an ultrasound every week performed because I was high risk. My doctor says that he does at the least 1 ultrasound every 3-4 weeks for his twin moms until their 20 week mark than every 2 weeks than 1 time a week when their further along.
I know your naturally scared at this point. Being pregnant is scarey in itself. But a multiple pregnancy is absolutely scarey. But try to relax as best as possible. What stress the mother goes through does affect the unborn babies just as much or worse sometimes.
Some pains with pregnancy can be blamed or at least related to not getting enough fluids. You, as the mother, have to drink enough for 3. Water is best. Juice and milk are also good choices. Most doctor don't expect an expected mother to totally deleate coffee, tea, or even sodas but they do reccommend limits.
I'll pray that your pregnancy goes well. And because your already worring so much about these little ones, it seems like your going to be a good mom.
WARNING: As a new mother of premature twins, who are healthy for their prematurity, it is so much work and a real challenge. But I know that it will pay off. I also have experienced many joys. The question that we get all the time is: Are those twins? They are identical. There is little differance and we even have to mark one to tell him from the other. That always gets me...

New Doc
by: Anonymous

I think you may want to look for a new doctor. The fact that you are not 100% confortable with yours is a red flag. I have two sets of twins and had ultrasounds pretty consistantly throughout my whole pregancy. Evn people having one baby get an ultrasound before 20-25 weeks. It never hurts to get a second opinion, ecspecially when it comes to the health of your babies. Good luck!

ER visit
by: Kristin

The reason I was given for not visiting the ER early on for bleeding is that the ER doctors are not OB/GYN's and when they do an U/S, if they don't know what they are looking for can cause more problems by poking and proding around. When I had bleeding i was strongly encouraged to go home and rest until the next morning when I could get into the Dr. If you are miscarrying thre is not a whole you can do to stop it, but if like in both of our situations, you're bleeding because of a hemmorage, then aggravating it can make it worse.

Advice
by: Destry

First, I agree with the rest of the girls, look for a new OB. I go to military doctors so basically I get whoever is on rotation for the day. Some are MUCH better than others and I now request them by name. I don't know why he was upset about the ultrasound, that is strange. You woudl figure if yuour bleeding they need to make sure the babies are okay and the only way I know to check is with ultrasound.

Second, I definately recommend joining this site. Ang get on the forum. There are many first time mom's and everyone is either going through being pregnant with twins or has already had them. I am 26.5 weeks right now with boy/boy twins. And like you I am 5'7 and was previously overweight so I am hoping I will be able to keep them in for full term. I just started showing in the last month and have only gained 20 pounds. The doctors will want you to gain like 45-65 pounds 1.5-2 pounds per week the whole pregnancy but I haven't yet. Some weeks you will put on a lot of weight around 21-23 weeks or so. I gained 8 pounds in 1 week but thats when you start adding a lot of water weight.

The site is really great, if you can't find a question on the search button, just post your own question and within 24 hours you will have numerous replies. It is a lot better than searching the internet because every little symptom I looked up on there always said something very scary and terrible. At least on here you are hearing it from people who have been through it. Even though its not doctors advise it helps to hear other people have had the same things and how it turned out for them.

You MUST go to your doctor or hospital if you have sharp pains which you suspect are not heart burn or similar.

Hi

The midwife that was seeing me send me to a doctor that specializes in twin pregnancies because she said all multiple pregnancies are considered high risk. I have been getting an ultrasound everytime I see my doctor which is once every two weeks and I'm only 13 weeks pregnant.
Wish you the best with your babies and you might consider finding a new doctor.

If you have any problems go to the hospital, I lost my twins at 22 weeks and everything in my pregnacy was going good.Your baby's come first and you dont wanna go threw what i did it the worse pain anyone can ever go threw, so if your having any pain or bleeding you need to go to the hospital i wouldnt care what my doctor said your baby are more important.

I agree with the ladies above.
CHANGE YOUR OB, to one who works for you. Carrying twins can be very stressful and risky. You deserve a doctor who understands both the medical& emotional aspects of a twin pregnancy. The more comfortable you are about the status and care of your unborn twins, the less stressful it will be and inturn healthier overall.
Of course, you are still going to worry and doctors can only do so much but you NEED to make sure that you and your OB are on the same page. Ask loads of questions and that things are explained to you enough so that you recognize your options and why/what your OB plans are for your care.

Hope this helps!

Hey there, I agree with the above post you definately need to get another OB, I was very high risk when I was carrying my twin girls and was taken off work when I was about 5, 5 1/2 months pregnant and I had ultrasounds every two weeks and when it got closer to my due date once a week.
Also if you are experiencing pain and are unsure about it, you should definately go to the hospital for a check. It may be nothing at all but it's always good to get it checked anyways just for your own peace of mind. Thats what the Nurses are there for.
I wish you all the best with your pregnancy. Hope this helps!
Take care of yourself and those babies!

easing your mind

First of all, congratulations! Have you considered joing the Raising Twins forum, it is absolutley wonderful and made up of amazing parents of twins. I couldn't have gotten through the first year and now beyond without the support of everyone on there. go to raisingtwins.com and join!

Vanishing twin symdrom usually occurs during the first trimester (before 12 weeks). It is when one baby "disappears" and is reabsorbed into the uterus.

At 8 weeks I also had a hemmorage and was urged not to go to the ER for an U/S. I was however seen by my OB the day after I started bleeding which is when the hemmorage was discovered. Our babies were just fine and eventually the hemmorage healed. I stopped bleeding within a couple of days.

It is pretty standard for a twin pregnancy to have an U/S every 4 weeks until the 3rd trimester when they become more frequent. You should also have an OB appt every 4 weeks where you will hear the babies heartbeats and you will be weighed and your urine checked to monitor for abnormalities. At about 20ish weeks I started seeing my OB every 2 weeks and then at about 32 weeks it was weekly.

It is a good chance you could carry to term, but twin pregnancies are high risk so there is alwys the chance or pre term labor and delivery. We delivered at 38+2 weeks after I was put on modifed bed rest at 26 weeks (12 weeks of bed rest).

It may be time to find a new OB that has experience with twins. Your care is of utmost importance and you need to be monitored closely to ensure that you and your babies are doing just fine.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask. I highly encourage you to join the forum as well.
