raising twins

If there's 2 babies in there one's going on EBAY!

We had 4 girls and we both thought a little boy would be nice - so we decided to give it one more try. I did start showing about 2 months and couldn't keep things hidden. My older girls and my friends - 2 of whom have twins kept saying imagine if it was twins!!

Well we went to the scan at 12 weeks and I went in alone while they checked things were fine and my husband stayed outside with the girls. I could tell by looking at the sonographers face that things weren't quite right - I was a bit of a dab hand at reading people - but she kept insisting things were fine. Well after a few minutes of me constantly asking and fearing the worse she said "Do you want to know now or wait til Hubby comes in?" Course I said just tell me and she said "there's two - look!" I just shed a few tears of relief as hubby and the girls came in and his first comment as he entered was "If you tell me there's two then one will be on Ebay" - Jokingly (I Hope).

Well after him sulking and moping for about a week, think he was a bit shell-shocked - how will we manage, we'll need a bigger car, a bigger house, a bigger buggy not to mention having 4 little ones under the age of 5. Me on the other hand- the less practical one was very excited and nervous thinking twin pregnancy with its problems, twin birth, twin breast-feeding but trying to remain positive. My mum lives about 5 minutes away and was a very hands on gran so she'd be there to help. This was to be grandchild number 13 so when I, or rather my 4 year old announced it would be twins she was delighted.

Unfortunately my mum passed away very suddenly in June when I was 5 months pregnant and things then started to get me really down. However getting monthly scans with the twins was a very positive thing for me and although my mum isn't around I had all my girls to keep me going. The pregnancy and the birth all went well I wasn't that big and everyone kept asking if I was sure there were two? bit of a silly question. I went to 37 weeks and 5 days and the contractions started naturally. I was advised to have an epidural as twin 2 was the wrong way around and may need help. Rose was born 5lbs 5ounces and then after an hour Carla appeared at a whopping 6lbs 11 1/2 ounces. They both had jaundice and Carla was in the Neonatal unit under the lamps for a couple of days - seeing all the other tiny babies in there made me appreciate how well things had gone for us.

Anyway they are now nearly five months and sleeping through the night, feeding well and Carla has started on solids and life is so hectic but worth it - don't get much time to myself and when I take my girls shopping have to make extra time for all the questions can cooing from other shoppers - especially the gasps when they ask "Are they all yours?"
