Help with sleeping at nap time with 9 month old boy/girl twins

by Tired out
(Canada)

Hi,
I have 9 month old boy/girl twins and they are presently in the same room. At nap time especially, one is waking the other up after only being asleep for 40 minutes. My other twin, he could sleep for longer, but she seems to automatically wake up 40 min in. I am thinking of putting them in separate rooms. Also, how do I get her to sleep longer? I know they need more sleep. They are also waking once a night still. They now are able to settle down right away usually, so that's good, but are still waking. Please, if someone can help with my nap time dilemma I sure would appreciate some suggestions. If I split them into separate rooms, how would I go about training her to sleep longer. She also uses a pacifier which I have begun to take away gradually. If she really wants it, I will put it in her hand and she will put it in.
Thanks

Nap time

Hi. It's so funny that you ask this question because I was having the same problem at 9 mos. I have a mentor from another twin group and here is her advice:
"I always and still do have one twin who just needs more sleep than the other. I guess I have always put the emphasis on "you are going to bed at the same time." And when Paige woke up, I'd run in and get her and let Julie sleep. I kept a journal when I noticed a change in sleep pattern too. Its easier to let them find their schedule than to be forced into one (my opinion) and then you can roll with it and adjust to it so that you can still have "alone and productive" time. I think at that age, mine were napping at 10 and 3, for just under 2 hours each nap, and then bed at 7 or 8? and they would sleep 11-13 hours through the night. Again, Paige would wake up at 6, and I wouldnt hear from Julie until an hour or so after. There is a great book, "Healthy Baby Happy Sleep" and I think you can read excerps on-line. My sister-in-law loved it after I recommended it to her. Its a very laid-back approach but does emphasize the importance of sleep and routine."

I found that if you stick with it they grow out of it. I kept on the same schedule and the twins sleep much better now. They are 13 mos and nap for around 2 hours twice a day or 3+ hours once a day. They are tending to wean toward the one nap. They also go to bed at 8 and are up around 6. Good luck and Happy Sleeping!
