Help With Parenting Identical Twins

I have identical twin girls who will turn 6 years old next month. Sometimes I may do something to one twin and the other cries and insists I do the same to her. Example, I may be walking by the table and pat the head of the twin I'm passing. The other one on the other side of the table gets upset if I do not walk around the table and pat her head. We've tried explaining that they won't always be treated exactly the same not only by us but also everyone else in their life. We would explain that if daddy gives one girl a piggy back ride then he may give the other one a piggy back ride tomorrow.

Is this common? How do I get through to them?

common among all kids, I believe

We just had twin boys, but we have this problem with our older children who are not twins. I think this is just a normal 'every kid' thing. We joke about it with our children if one starts complaining about not getting something another child got, we tell them that the next time one gets a spanking, they'll get one too! They know we're just joking and it makes the situation lighter and they usually stop complaining after that.
