Growth Deficit in one Twin Baby?

by Sara
(Sand Rock, AL, USA)

We had our gender scan today and found out we are having a healthy
baby boy but couldn't determine the other baby's sex. Baby B is a
lot smaller than Baby A (our boy) and the deficit has gotten to a
week and half difference. The ultrasound tech showed some hesitation about what she saw and the doctor told us not to start worrying yet,
but well- that's easier said than done. Has anyone dealt with this
issue before? I could not find anything online to shed some light
and I am a first-timer who happens to be pregnant with twins. My
babies are fraternal and have their own placentas and sacs so I am stumped as to why one is advancing so much faster. Someone please
help me out!

gender?

When I had the twins (previous entry), I also had hypErthyroid which I am convinced contributed to the defect. Those were some symptoms....However, the doctors think that it was a little bit of everything.

The gender wouldn't make a size difference. The amnio will let you what the gender is....if is another boy, it will tell you whether or not they are identical. The biggest reason wouldbe to inform you if there are any genetic defects causing the slow growth. If it isn't genetic, it maybe a congenital problem like I had.

Discordant Growth??
by: Anonymous

After a follow up ultrasound 4 days later, the difference between Baby A and B grew from 8 days to 2 weeks. Now I am being sent to the Atlanta Perinatal Consultants. I'm really scared and concerned something is wrong with my Baby B (whom we think is a girl).
Based on the ultrasound, it was determined Baby B was either a girl or the testicles were undescended.
My doctor told me she highly recommends me letting them do an amniocentesis if they ask. Is it possible that Baby B is a girl and just smaller?? I don't know what the general consensus was concerning size and gender.

*Also, I have been having dizzy spells, palpitations, and seeing flashes of light or floaters in my peripheral vision. Is this normal for the cardiovascular load I am taking on with two babies?

My friend is also pregnant with twins. She is 31 weeks alng almost 32 and she had an ultrasound the other day and it showed a 2 1/2 pound differce. The girl just now turned 4.5 pounds and the other is just now 2 pounds. They havnt said anything at all to her. She also has extreme type 1 diabetes. She is on a pump and everything. Does this sound right to anyone?

PLEASE be your own advocate with your doctor. The discordance depends on how far along you are. Towards the end of the twin pregnancy there is greater forgiveness for the difference provided that both babies are still within their individual range.

I had a twin pregnacy where at ten weeks there was a three day difference. At 15 weeks it was ten days and by 30 weeks (delivery, they were3 weeks apart. Baby B was dated the size of a 27 weeker.

After genetic/amnio testing came back fine, it was understood that Baby B's placenta was not developed well enough to sustain proper nutrition and growth. I was on bedrest (lying on the left helps circulate better blood flow) from 15 weeks on. I had a very high in protein diet (Boost/Ensure). I had weekly ultrasound from 15-25 weeks and then biweekly. One being a regular ultrasound and one called a biophysical up until 30 weeks. At that visit, diastolic flow had stopped to baby B and we delivered. Baby A was 3lb 12oz and baby B was 2lb 2oz.

I do not want to scare you, but just give you my information so that you can be aware that these things happen. If you aren't comfortable with your doctor's standpoint, keep asking questions and demand the best care possible. You may not be able to control everything, but if you arm yourself with knowledge the chances are you will feel like you are helping to achieve the best outcome.
