Early delivery of fraternal twin boys

by Debra Parkman
(Hagerstown, MD)

Early delivery of fraternal twin boys Dominick and Jordan.

I was very sick from the beginning of my pregnancy. I got real sick at 6 weeks gestation and had to be put on medicine to regulate my nausea and vomiting. I didn't find out until 15 weeks gestation that I was pregnant with twins when a sudden radiating pain up my ribs sent me to the hospital. The ultrasound tech turns to me and says "Did you know you were pregnant with twins?" Looking at her surprised I said, "no, I didn't but kind of suspected it. I was already showing at that point. I looked like I was already 5 months along. I didn't have any preterm labor scares, but because I've had high risk pregnancies in the past I had to go see a perinatologist along with my regular OB/GYN.

Everything was going fine until I go in for my 36 week sonogram. I was told at that time that one of the twins was showing decreased blood flow to the brain and signs of IUGR. They told me that they had to deliver them that day. I was scared because I didn't know what to expect. I've had preemies before, but not twins and I didn't know what they meant by the decreased blood flow to the brain. I had an emergency c-section and Dominick was born at 6:20pm weighing 5lbs 4oz and had a little trouble breathing because he had swallowed some amniotic fluid on his way out. Jordan was born at 6:21pm weighing 4lbs 5oz and breathing just fine.

They had to stay in the hospital for 5 days in the NICU. I had some problems with my heartrate being low after delivery, but it went back to normal 2 days after they were born. They are now 6 weeks old and thriving. They went to the doctor's last week and Dominick weighs 7lbs 12oz and Jordan weighs 6lbs 6oz. I have 3 other children and I love being a mother of twins and having 5 boys all together.
