Do you have to go on bedrest when you're pregnant with twins?

by Eve
(Wisconsin)

I've been told by some that I may end up being put on bed rest? Is that true, and when about do they suggest that? Also can I get some information about preeclampsia? Thank you.

bedrest

I think it just depends on your situation and you, because I went on bedrest at 30 weeks and I went all the way up to 40 weeks and 1 day. They said as long as I was okay and the babies were, but I did have to go to the doctor every 4 days for a check up.

Not on bed rest
by: Anonymous

I am 37 weeks pregnant with twins and have not been on bed rest. I am anxious to go into labor so I have been walking a lot and doing errands. I don't know if they will induce labor or I will have a c-section. I have borderline gestational diabetes because I am in my 40s, but it is controlled. Isn't it dangerous to go past 39 weeks with twins?

bedrest

I was not on bedrest throughout my whole pregnancy. I made it to 37 weeks +2. I had a scheduled induction at 37 weeks. Baby "A" 6 lbs 9oz, "B" 5 lbs 2 oz. Went home from the NICU with me when I was discharged 4 days later.

9 weeks later "A" 10lbs 10oz, "B" 9lbs 2oz.

Bedrest really depends on alot of things, both physically and medically. I had a pretty healthy pregnancy and really lucked out that I wasn't put on rest.

Good Luck!!

I went on bedrest when i was 27 weeks plus i got 17p injections which is usually used on singleton pregnancies not multiples but it worked to keep me pregnant. I complied with the doctors orders and delivered at 38 weeks 5 days by csection because i showed no signs of labor starting on iots own. and they were born happy and healthy. and he suggested it because my belly had gotten so big to the point that he thought it would cause me to dilate just from the weight of the babies and uterus.

good luck

Bed Rest
by: Katie

Hi,
While bed rest is a possibility, some people don't have to be on bed rest ever. I delivered my twins at 36 weeks and was never on bed rest. In fact, I was in labor at work (light contractions)so I sat on a stabilizing ball while I sent out a few, last e-mails and wrapped up a couple of loose ends. Then, went home and waited until things picked up.
If you are healthy and the babies are healthy, you have a good chance of living "free" until you go into labor!
Good Luck!

Bedrest
by: Diana

I was 35 weeks and 4 days when I delievered my twins. I was having pains when I was 22 weeks and they told me that I was at risk for pre trem labor. My Doctor told me that I should rest alot, not to be on my feet and to drink plenty of water. I also have a at that time 4 yr old boy so trying to rest realy wasen't an option. I was in and out of the hospital until I was 32 weeks when they admitted me beacuse I was already 3 cm dialated. I was on strict bedrest for 3 weeks in the hospital. (Not Pleasent) While in the hospital they found out that my toxin levels were really high. The toxins that release from my gull bladder that are suppose to go into my intestines were releasing into my skin(not Good). They told me that the max level the toxins should be at is 40 my levels were 132. Due to this they told me they don't know why yet but the toxins, if released into my blood stream can cause still birth of one or both of my children. So they induced my labor and I delievered both vaginally. I think your Dr will place you on strict bedrest early in your pregnancy if you are having complications. Good Luck and Enjoy!! Twins are wonderful!!

Preeclampsia
by: Anonymous

I delivered my twin boys at 32.4 weeks due 2 Preeclampsia. It is marked by high blood pressure accompanied with a high level of protein in the urine. Swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms..there's no cure 4 it, U just have 2 deliver the babies..I delivered by C-section, and the babies spent 10 days in the NICU.. they are 14 months now happy and healthy toddlers :)
by the way, I didn't go on bed rest during my pregnancy, but U must rest as much as U can.
good luck!

Bedrest a possibility
by: Shelly Cunningham

Eve,
Bedrest is a definite possibility, but it really depends how healthy you are, how your body responds to your twin pregnancy & the health of those little babes.
I went on light bedrest at 25 weeks, and was on bedrest until I gave birth at 37 weeks. I could run occasional errands, was able to attend all my baby showers, and could bathe etc., but any extended activity resulted in contractions. So my daily excursions were limited.
Just keep an open dialogue with your doctor about your pre-term labor symptoms and any concerns over your body or the babies health.
You will be just fine, and even if you have to go on bedrest, when those babies arrive healthy, it will have been worth the wait.
Soon the whole pregnancy becomes a distant memory anyway!

Bed Rest
by: Anonymous

I also never was placed on bed rest. I worked as a surgical nurse until my 30th week and then by belly was just too big to reach the surgical table and patients without being a problem. I then worked in recovery and preop until my 34th week when I left on my maturnity leave. I find that if you continue to stay active, within moderation, the better you do. I delevered as a planed c-section at 38 weeks and that was only because my belly was measuring at 50 weeks so the doctor felt they were big enough and I was getting too uncomfortable. I also never had pre-eclampsia. Your doctor will keep and eye on everything and hopefully you will have a wonderful twin preganancy.

bed rest
by: Jennifer

Eve, I was never put on bed rest and I delivered via scheduled c-section at 38 weeks. I know that bed rest is always possible, even more when you are carrying two. But it is something that you should not worry about unless your Dr. tells you too. It is something that your DR. will watch. I know plenty of twin Mommies that were not put on bedrest. Hope this helps..... As for preeclamsia it is high blood pressure due to pregnancy and will only go down when you deliver. It can get very high, and when it stays that way you can have seizers and liver failure. But it only happens to a small amount of people, and is also something your Dr. will be watching for. I did not have that either...
