Conceiving twins after miscarrying twins?

by Kim hall
(Hertfordshire)

I went for my 12 week scan and found I had miscarried with twins, what are my chances of having twins again? Will I find it hard to conceive after my operation or could it happen quickly?

im devastated for u, seriously i have tears going down my face reading that. im so sorry u went thru this its just terrible. i lost a twin with my last daughter, it was early on so was definelty alot easier to cope with than what your going thru. i am now pregnant again and its twins again but we are int he process of finding out if we have yet again lost one.

i was like u, thought id be devastated if i found out i wasnt having twins in my next pregnancy, but im so scared that i will end up loosing one or both later in pregnancy that i would much prefer to have a healthy single pregnancy, or even better, fast forward to the end of the pregnancy and have 2 healthy babies.

i no it must be hugely difficult for u at the moment as u really have been thru hell, but give urself time. i think everyones pregnancy after a twin one is a worry, as however the previous pregnancy turned out, it is an anxious wait to find out what is in line for u next time.

please take ur time, think about the pro's and con's of having a single pregnancy and realise it is such a healthier and less risky one.

sending u lots of hugs x x x

Lost the most amazing twin boys while 7months (28weeks) pregnant in October 2011. Afraid of getting preggers again because i'd be dissapointed if they were not twins. The worst part is that it was a SID(Sudden Infant Death), we dont know what we can do to prevent this from happening in the next pregnancy.

Im the anonymous person who asked u if ur twins were fraternal. Fraternal means when there are 2 seperate eggs fertilised which in a different term would be non identical. There is a much higher chance of conceiving twins if they were fraternal because that means that you and ovulating more than one egg in your monthly cycle, im not sure exactly of the percentage but i am told it is 65%. As apose to fraternal there is non fraternal which means that it is one fertilised egg that splits creating identical twins, this is less common because it is solely reliable on the individual egg splitting so if your pregnancy had been this then this is less likely to happen again.

I was like you thinking my pregnancy will be slightly upsetting if it isnt twins BUT having thought about the complications with carrying twins and the risks i will be more nervous if i conceive twins again thinking i may end up going through loosing one again, and that would devastate me. I hope this helps x

I miscarried twins at 8 weeks. It was my first pregnancy and never expected it to be twins. I have not tried to conceive again as I am worried and axious about dealing with the loss again. I would also like to know the likelihood of having twins again after miscarrying twins. When I am ready to try again and do become pregnant, I worry I will feel sad if there are not two again.

I found out I was six weeks pregnant and knew the right thing for the baby was to have a termination I went through with it and unbeliavbly still believed in my decision..about a week later I passed a blood clot..only it wasn't a blood clot it was a foetus.I was told it could have been twins which broke my heart it was like a sign that it was the wrong choice.I don't know whether the foetus was never aborted or there really was two babies and one was terminated and one wasn't as I was only six weeks so twins are not detected that early help?

lost one twin
by: Anonymous

hey peeps

as this is a really old board im sure that no one will see this but here goes. i am currently 33 weeks pregnant with my surviving twin. this is my 3rd pregnancy, both my girls i have were not twins and are very health and gorgeous. when i got pregnant this time i new in my heart frim about 5 weeks it was twins, my morning sickness was much worse than with my other 2. at 12 wk scan we found out we were expecting twins, but one had misscarried. i was devastated yet thrilled that we still had the one, it was an extremely confusing rollercoaster. i am now only 7 weeks away from my due date and am super excited but still think about the twin every single day.

i have also been told that the chances of concieving fraternal twins again is about 65%. so any more pregnancies i have are going to be stressfull.

I was surprised when I found out I was pregnant with identical twins at 6 wks.. However, I lost them a couple of days after and didnt know till they did another ultrasound at 8 wks and there were no heartbeats.. I was not surprised but still devastated though. I hope we can conceive again with twins, but don't know the chances. Anyone have an answer..

Thank you
by: Heidi

I miscarried twins 2 days ago, after going to my first scan (which should have been my 12 week scan), I found out it was twins and there was no heart beat. There has been some comfort in knowing that my situation isn't unique although I would never wish this feeling on anyone. I found out that I had actually miscarried 6 weeks earlier and after the ultrasound I went to the doctor and he rushed me to emergency and after losing 2 liter's of blood, I had to have an emergency D&C. 2 days post op and I just want my healthy babies back. Thank you for offering some comfort in such a traumatic time in my life.

Hi,

I miscarried identical twins last year early into my third trimester and then conceived fraternal twins a year later, I miscarried them late in my second trimester. It is very possible to have one set of twins after another.

loss of twins
by: Lorelei

Hi there, I also just miscarried twins and didn't find out until our 12 week scan. I was amazed to be told there were two and also then devastated to learn we had lost both. I also hope that I will be able to conceive twins again so its good to hear there is a slightly higher chance if you have already had one twin pregnancy. I wish you guys all the best with your future pregnancies

Hi all, I too have just miscarried twins, myself and my partner have been going through ferility treatment so when we went for an early scan it was devestating to find out that neither of them had a heartbeat.
Im hoping that we will go onto conceive again and that due to the fertility treatment it will be twins.x

Chances of Twins
by: Anonymous

I was told by my doctor that my chances of carrying twins again is 1 in 40 or 2.5% opposed to a 1% chance for a first time pregnancy or pregnancy after a singleton. I miscarried identical twins at 7.5 weeks. I'm trying to get pregnant again and really hope that I will become pregnant with twins again.

This is an old board but hopefully there are still some people lurking on here. about 6 months ago i was pregnant and went in for an appointment at 12 weeks to find out we had conceived twins that sadly didnt make it. i had a d and c and that was that. now 6 months later i am pregnant again and have a sinking suspicion of twins. i have no family history but my fiancee does, so we are crossing fingers! what are my odds? anyone have a guess?

Twins after miscarring twins
by: Anonymous

I would ask your doctor how long you should wait to try again because I didn't wait the amount of time my doctor told me to wait after losing my twins and I had 2 miscarriages after. I had a tubal and nonviable twin pregnancy. That was in April of 2008 and I am now going into my 30th week of pregnancy with yet another set of fraternal twins so it is very possible to have another set of twins after losing a set. In fact, once you become pregnant with a set of twins your chances of becoming pregnant with another set are extremely higher.
