Choosing a Doctor & Hospital when You're Pregnant With Twins

by Carin
(Shawnee, OK)

I am 9 weeks pregnant with twins. My husband and I just found out on 4-29-10, during our first ultrasound, that we're having twins. These will be our first children. I was planning to see my regular OB/Gyn for the pregnancy and give birth at the hospital in the small town where I live. After reading about the potential difficulties of a twin pregnancy, I am wondering if need to find a provider with expertise in dealing with multiples and whether the hospital is fully equipped to take care of my babies, especially if their are problems. I welcome input on what other twin moms did. Did you go with your regular doctor or find a specialist? Did you have to go to a different hospital than you had planned for the birth? I also welcome your thoughts on the questions I should ask my doctor about her experience and the capabilities of the hospital to determine if they are right for me and my babies. I have my next appointment on 5-11-10.

OB, specialist, and hospital
by: Brenda

I saw my regular OB. I have seen him for many years and I trusted him and he has delivered many, many multiples. He did send me to a specialist (perinatoligist) since I was over the age of 35 and pregnant with identical twins. I had my two times a week non stress tests with her around 30 weeks but still saw my OB regularly. We only have one hospital here and it has a NICU and labor and delivery dept., so I wasnt worried about hospitals.

Dr and hospitals

Congratulations on finding out that you guys are expecting twins!

I stayed with my regular OB and never had to see a specialist. The only catch with us was that the hospital that we wanted to deliver at did not have a NICU, so we had a back up plan if our girls decided to come early. The deal was that if I made it past 35 weeks then we could deliver at our intended hospital because they are equipped to deal with almost term babies but if I went into labor before 35 weeks then I would have to deliver at another hospital with a NICU. Well, I was put on modified bed rest at 26 weeks so we prepared for the worst and low and behold I NEVER went into labor and we had a scheduled c-section at 38+2 weeks. Our girls both weighed 6lbs 2ozs and came home with us. They never had to leave our side during our stay in the hospital.

My advice to you would be to have a back-up plan just in case, but plan for a healthy normal pregnancy. The best advice that my OB gave me was to NOT look online because there is a lot of scary info out there about twins. Are you a memeber of Raising Twins (the forum)? If not, I highly suggest it. It has been the best place for me to find support from people that know exactly what you are going through!

Best of Luck!
