Cause of identical twinning?

Has any one come across any recent information about what CAUSES identical twinning? I know all the basic facts such as it's not genetic to have identical twins, and that it supposedly results from a mutation of some sort, or just chance altogether. Surely by now you think they would have come up with something better than that. Has any one ever had several set of identical twins? For example, I have a 6 yr old and a set of identical twins that are 3, if I were to get pregnant again i know my chances of having twins again has increased but to what degree? Also I can't help but wonder if identical twinning is due to some kind of chemical reaction between two people, Since my daughter has a different biological father than my twins. I'm very interested to find out about any new studies or information on this. I don't truly believe that identical twinning is due to a mutation, or just chance. There has to be more to it.

Identical Twins
by: Anonymous

Your looking into wanting to know more about identical twins is an interesting one. I too have a personal interest in this area. More of a quest I suppose. For a long time now I have heard the comments about how similar Identical Twins are. They wear the same clothes, the feel each others pains no matter the distance between the two. They can mirror each other and so forth. All sounds pretty normal to me. Personally I think differently as an Identical Twin myself. Two things I do not hear of with Identical twins is that one wants to be aknowledged as an individual and not the same as the other twin. I prefer to lay low under the radar as I feel I am treated just the same as everyone else. My father would have us dress the same just to impress others. I know the qualities my twin and I have and that is good enough for me. The second is to experience dreaming the same dream is incredible. A gift to definitely appreciate. My twin has her view of computer technology of this day and age. I have a more optomistic spiritual view which is amazing for us both. With our two different passions, they are still under the same principle. I have a great passion about life and people. Concerns for global population where I feel my twin is catching up with. She is also the elder of us at birth and that itself was an interesting story. Our mum said I was coming first but complications going on with my twin and I, I happened to get pushed out of the way and my twin came first. I was told that had I come fisrt, our mother and I would have died due to me been breach. So my twin paved the way for me. Our mum was also an Identical Twin and the elder of the two. In another town my mother and her twin picked a horse each in the Melborne Cup. Back in my town not knowing, I took a bet for my partner (at that time) and picked the winner and second place. A year later my mum had mentioned it. Her sister picked Pop Rock and my mum picked Delta Blues. They forgot to take the bet but it was ok in the end because I picked both. Very Interesting. We are aware of telepathy with the bloodline being so strong. I still have lots to discover and have a deep appreciation for who we are and respect that. Fame is nothing commared to our own unique make-up. Enjoy your journey too.

Cause of identical twinning
by: Destry

I am supposidly having fraternal twins because they are in two sacks. However it all depends on when the egg split. SInce I know I am having two boys there is a chance they could be identical and I will only know for sure if they are identical or fraternal after they are born and they do a DNA test. I read somewhere that they think identical twins actually does have something to do with the fathers sperm. I can't remember where I found the article but it explained the theory that the mom contributed 50% of the genes and the fathers sperm if it has "extra" genes attached to it will cause the egg to split because it has more genes than needed for one baby and doesn't knwo what else to do. That makes more sense to me than no one knowing. Twins do not run in my family at all so I really didn't even consider it possible to have twins because every thign I had read says its all about the mom. This is just a theory but it sounds possible. After all something has to make the egg split.

Identicals
by: Brenda

Identical twins start off with one egg thats fertilized to form one zygote (monozygotic) and then divides into two seperate embryos. There is a great show called "In the Womb" that was on the discovery channel. The whole show was designated to identical twins. It really goes into the science behind it and how rare identical twins are and if they in fact have the same dna, personalities, etc. It was a great show since we have 10 month old identical twin girls. Not wuite sure if you would be able to have indeticals again if you got pregnant. The chances are probably pretty low.

Identical twins are the result of one egg being fertilized, then spliting in two. Fraternal twins (like mine)are because there were two separate eggs fertilized. I'm sure you can even see a video of the fertilization process of twins on line. How wonderful to be double blessed twice!
