21 and pregnant with twins

first week home

first week home

I turned 21 on May 13th, 2008. Went out and had a blow-out bash for my birthday. It is the day you wait for, for like ever right?! We went to the lake May 19th and I fell in and the following week my ears hurt like I had an ear infection.

I went to the doctor to have it checked out and it always says, when was the first day of your last period. I thought and figured it to be April 20, 2008. I was 3 days late. I didn't think much of it then and come Sunday May 25, 2008 I was 7 days late and decided to take a test. I peed on the stick, still not thinking I was pregnant and sure enough I was.

I was a little scared, but very excited. When we told my Mother-in-law she said, oh it's going to be twins. I told her to be quiet, because if it was, I was sending one to live with her!

I had just lost my job and insurance, so we went through the process of getting health care, and once I did we went to the doctor. I was 12 weeks pregnant and had already taken about 5 tests to confirm I was pregnant. Which I knew I was with all the morning sickness.

He put the ultrasound thing on my stomach and said "Yup, you are pregnant." When I wittily said "Ok, just tell me there is only one in there" He said, "No, Twins" Which I thought he was joking, then I realized there was two heads there!

Then he went into all the things that could go wrong with a twin pregnancy which scared me. I had just got comfortable with the idea of being a mom to one baby, then he tells me there is two, and that they could not make it to delivery.

Everyone for the next couple days said oh are you excited, which I responded, not really, I am freaked out. After about a week it sunk it, and I started to deal with the fact that there were two babies coming into our life. We lived in a loft and knew we had to move, so we bought a house and moved in. We were hoping for a boy and a girl, which we would name them Tucker Lynn and Emma Lee.

We went to the doctor at exactly 17 weeks, which he could not tell the sex of either baby. So we went and had a 3D ultrasound done and they confirmed the sex, both girls! Then we had to figure out another girl name, which we decided on Lexi Lynn.

I went into labor at 25 weeks, and was bawling my eyes out pleading with God to protect my babies, they needed to be in there. He listened. At 31 weeks I went into labor again, which I dilated to 3cm. I was REALLY crying then, I knew they would make it, but I did not want them to stay in the hospital with tubes all out of them, so my doctor decided to give me a set of steroid shots to help their lung mature.

I finally made it to 34 weeks on December 14, 2008. I was so excited to make it that far. Went to the doctor on the 15, was no longer dilated and every thing looked good. I woke up that next morning at 3 am having contractions as usual. Took a bath, which would normally make them go away, which it did not. Ate a bagel and drank a glass of milk. They were 4 minutes strong and steady. So we went to the hospital. We got there and got all hooked up about 6:30 she checked me at 6:45 and I was 4 1/2 cm 100 percent effaced. She called the doctor and come in and said, you just won yourself a trip to the operating room (Lexi was traverse, so we opted for a c-section)

At 7:05 my doctor checked me again and I was 5 1/2 cm. Which was hard to believe, because Emma was face up. They rushed me to the operating room so fast I did not get to see any of my family. Most did not make it by the time the girls were born. They were born at 7:50 and 7:51 am. They went to the NICU immediately. Lexi was turning blue. The next few days were a blur, but after 7 long scary days they came home.

They are now 3 1/2 months and weight over 11.5 Lbs each! You would never know there were born early.

Twins too

I am currently pregnant with twins and I am only 20. It was a shock to my husband and I when we found out I was pregnant and then to find out it was twins and then they were diagnosed as momo twins. We are greatful that they have now been diagnosed as mono di twins now but it has taken a while to sink in. It still scares me at times that i will have 2 kids at the age of 21.

Hello. Your girls are beautiful! I also was 21 when I learned I was going to be having twins and as it came as a HUGE shock, like it did for you. My boys were born February 24, 2009 at exactly 35 weeks. They both stayed in the NICU for 2 weeks because of some breathing and eating problems. They are now just about 6 weeks old and they are doing great! They have almost doubled their birth weights and the whole NICU experience is becoming a distant memory, although I will never forget those terrible 2 weeks of uncertainty. Even though this is the most difficult thing I have ever done, being a mom to two such wonderful gifts is truly a blessing. God Bless, and good luck to you and your family!! :o)
